MELAKA: The Melaka government is mulling withdrawing financial aid from students who skip school for more than 30 days a year, after it found 3,000 primary and secondary students playing truant daily in the state.
State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs executive councillor Datuk Rahmad Mariman said the proposal was among 10 main resolutions tabled at a recent two-day convention organised by the state government.
The convention also involved Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG), community, and education strategic partners.
Rahmad said an estimated 3,000 students play truant every day in Melaka for various reasons, including laziness, parental indifference, parents being at work, or citing illness without submitting a medical certificate.
"In such cases, it is still counted as truancy because there is no medical certificate.
"Therefore, we propose that in the future, any student who skips school for more than 30 days a year will have their eligibility for any government incentive withdrawn," he said after a Melaka Islamic Religious Department kindergarten appreciation ceremony in Bukit Palah today.
There are an estimated 161,000 students in Melaka.
Rahmad, who is also the Melaka Islamic Religious Council deputy chairman, said the proposed incentives to be withdrawn include scholarships, bursaries, and early schooling aid.
He said the action was necessary as a warning to students and parents to be more responsible for school attendance.
"If students are truly interested in learning, they will attend school. But when they skip up to 30 or 60 days, it shows they no longer appreciate the educational opportunity given.
"The withdrawal of aid would at least send a stronger signal and warning compared to taking legal action, which is a lengthy process," he said.
