| KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry will introduce a centralised admission system for international students across the country's universities to make Malaysia a regional higher education hub.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the system will be developed to improve efficiency, accessibility, transparency and competitiveness in attracting global students.
"We will also streamline the processing of international student applications through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), specifically to manage international students.
"This will ensure academic quality and university capacity. We will also strengthen international student office infrastructure at each university," he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said a total of 20 public universities in Malaysia had enrolled 53,322 international students last year, with Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recording the highest numbers. The three universities enrolled 27,669 international students, with the largest numbers coming from China, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
"For international student enrolment across all universities, undergraduates numbered 13,986 or 2.3 per cent of total students, while postgraduates totalled 39,336 or 6.4 per cent.
"At the three universities with the highest international student intake, undergraduates numbered 6,988, including 5,812 from China, 528 from Indonesia and 144 from Bangladesh.
"For postgraduates, there were 20,681 students, including 14,711 from China, 912 from Iraq and 684 from Indonesia," he said.
He said this in response to Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor), who asked for a list of the three public universities with the largest international student enrolment, broken down by country of origin and level of study, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Mustapha said the ministry was focusing on enrolling international postgraduate students to enhance research capabilities with their expertise, while for undergraduate or mainstream programmes, priority was given to local students |
