| KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has urged graduates of Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) to view themselves as nation-builders, using the knowledge they have gained to promote the welfare of the community and to take on the responsibilities of young national leaders.
The King cautioned graduates against being distracted by modern temptations or engaging in unhealthy practices.
He made the remarks at the university's 15th Convocation Ceremony today.
"In truth, graduates are a strategic asset to drive the nation toward progress and a brighter future.
"Use your knowledge wisely and become young leaders who contribute meaningfully to the country. Never disappoint the hopes of your parents or engage in actions that can undermine the nation's identity," he said.
Earlier, UPNM vice-chancellor Lieutenant General Datuk Arman Rumaizi Ahmad said today's graduates are not only the pillars of the nation's defence intellectual capacity but also key players in determining Malaysia's sovereign future.
This aligns with this year's convocation theme, "Visionary Graduates, Heirs of Sovereignty."
A total of 1,011 students completed their studies for the 2024 and 2025 academic years.
Among them, 15 were recipients of the Program Siswa Sulung, an initiative by the Higher Education Ministry to enable children from B40 families to become first-generation graduates.
Graduates included 24 awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 55 master's degrees, 783 bachelor's degrees, and 149 diplomas.
UPNM also conferred the Royal Academic Awards to two recipients: Kalishwaran Saravanan for a Bachelor of Computer Science (Computer Systems Security) and Iffah Dahlia Mahadzir for a Bachelor of Defence Human Resource Management.
The awards highlight that social mobility through education can cultivate strategic talent for the nation.
Additionally, Honorary Commander Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim received the Chancellor's Excellent Doctorate Award (Social Sciences) for his PhD in Management and Administration from the Faculty of Defence Management.
The Chancellor's Excellent Doctorate Award (Science and Technology) was presented to Capt Dr Thacnatharen Nagarajan for his PhD in Chemistry.
Also present were UPNM pro-chancellor Admiral (Rtd) Tan Sri Datuk Dr Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, and members of the university board of directors. |
