KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) has proposed that the RM100 Madani book vouchers for higher learning students be increased. The proposal, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said, has been submitted to the Finance Ministry as based on feedback from students, the current allocation is not enough.   Mustapha said the matter had been raised by many parties, saying that students are faced with high costs in purchasing books. "Many feel that the RM100 book voucher is too low in value. "At the ministry level, we have proposed to the MOF that the amount be differentiated according to students pursuing bachelor's, master's and doctoral (PhD) programmes.   "The matter is still under the MOF's consideration. For now, the Cabinet and government have approved only RM100 for this year, amounting to RM50 million," he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara today.   He was responding to a supplementary question from Senator Dr Wan Martina Wan Yusoff, who asked if there were plans to raise the value of the Madani book voucher. Dr Wan Martina noted that when she was pursuing her medical studies in the 1980s, each student received a book allowance of RM700.   The Madani book voucher initiative, worth RM100 for higher learning institution students, was introduced last Thursday and will run until Dec 12. It will benefit 500,000 students from public universities, polytechnics, community colleges and private institutions. MOHE had previously said the initiative is part of the government's ongoing commitment to supporting students' learning needs and easing their financial burden. Meanwhile, Mustapha said students nationwide have already redeemed RM27 million worth of vouchers as of Monday. "This shows that our students truly appreciate and greatly need this assistance. We will also forward the proposal to the MOF," he said.
