KUALA LUMPUR: The Madani Debate Academy will be implemented in stages at fully residential schools nationwide starting next year, said Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh. He said the first phase will involve 38 residential schools.   "The Madani Debate Academy is not merely a co-curricular programme, but a long-term investment in shaping outstanding human capital– future leaders who are critical thinkers, ethical and possess strong leadership qualities. "The academy focuses on intellectual empowerment, development of critical arguments and continuous training to ensure that all residential schools students are given equal opportunities to receive comprehensive debate education. "This will allow a new generation of debaters to express their views with confidence and maturity, while upholding values of ethics and decorum, even when faced with differing opinions," he said in response to Senator Datuk Seri Prof Emeritus Dr Awang Sariyan in Dewan Negara.   Awang Sariyan inquired about the plans to establish the Madani Debate Academy at all residential schools as a platform for the transfer of knowledge, values and noble cultures from other civilisations to enhance and advance national civilisation, rather than merely as a foreign language learning programme.   Wong said the Education Ministry is working closely with higher learning institutions and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to ensure the programme is implemented effectively, with wide-reaching impact for students nationwide. "The academy also has the potential to become a regional reference centre for debate, thereby elevating Malaysia's education standards to the international stage," he said.   On July 26, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the government is set to establish the Madani Debate Academy in stages at all residential schools nationwide, aimed at strengthening the language proficiency and public speaking skills among students. Fadhlina said the academy would not merely serve as a training space for students participating in the upcoming Prime Minister's Cup Debate Competition, but also as a platform to equip them with the ability to articulate and express their views confidently.
