| KUALA LUMPUR: Students who have been offered university placements are urged to register first and promptly inform the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) if they face financial difficulties or other challenges.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the ministry provided various forms of financial assistance, including the Siswa Sulung Keluarga Malaysia (Sulung) Development Programme and the Yayasan Perkasa Siswa (YPS) initial study aid for those in need.
"My advice to all who have been offered the opportunity to further their studies is to contact me or the ministry should you encounter any problem, financial constraint, or obstacle.
"Register first. I have instructed all vice-chancellors to assist and facilitate students in the registration process," he said in a Facebook post last night.
Zambry said the ministry's commitment was reflected in its immediate intervention to assist two students, Ikram and Fairuz, who were on the verge of turning down offers from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Arau, Perlis, and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Kedah, due to financial hardship.
Their plight was highlighted by Facebook user Wan Nurfarahin Wan Roslee, who tagged Zambry in her post, prompting MoHE officers to promptly reach out.
He said the two cousins had been working at a burger stall, earning RM20 a day to support themselves, despite having achieved excellent matriculation results — Ikram with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.75 and Fairuz with 3.92.
"I had a video call with both of them and urged them to proceed with registration without worrying about fees or preparatory expenses. God willing, we will assist and ease the process," he said.
Zambry also expressed his appreciation to Wan Nurfarahin for bringing the matter to light, which enabled MoHE and UiTM to take swift action to ensure the students could register. |
