KUALA LUMPUR: A new subject on human development will be introduced in General Studies (MPU) courses for university students, the Higher Education Ministry announced. Its minister, Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, said the subject would emphasise character building and 'tasawwur', or perspective and worldview.   Zambry was responding to Indera Mahkota Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah in the Dewan Rakyat when asked whether the Higher Education Ministry would introduce courses on character development, in line with initiatives launched by the Education Ministry. He said that while the MPU framework had been in place for some time, its implementation had been ineffective and inconsistent due to differing schools of thought. "Thankfully, through a series of engagements between the two schools of thought, we have managed to unify them," he said.   Earlier today, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry would embed character development elements into existing school subjects next year to instil good values in students.   Fadhlina added that the initiative would not involve introducing a new subject; instead, it would be incorporated into daily lessons to strengthen students' moral values and character through practical application. She said teachers would allocate time during lessons for character-building activities that focus on practising and internalising values in daily life.
