| JASIN: The government is prepared to place Malaysian students affected by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East into local higher education institutions if the need arises.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the move is part of the ministry's contingency plan to ensure students can continue their studies without disruption, including those who have recently received offers to study in affected countries.
"If it happens, space will be provided for them to continue their studies here, in accordance with their results, courses, and educational background, as there is understanding at the university level," he told reporters after attending a town hall programme at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Jasin.
He said discussions would typically focus on credit transfers based on guidelines set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency to avoid students having to repeat their studies.
Zambry added that the approach is not new and has been implemented in past crises, including during the Iran–Iraq conflict and involving Malaysian students in Kuwait.
He said there are no official figures on affected students, as universities in the region continue to operate, with numbers generally low except in countries such as Jordan and Egypt.
"However, the ministry will remain prepared and await feedback from students and educational institutions before taking further action," he said. |
