| KOTA KINABALU: The Higher Education Ministry has received an official report from Universiti Malaya (UM) regarding a theatre performance allegedly containing indecent elements that recently went viral.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said UM admitted in the report that certain aspects of the performance touched on sensitivities and required improvement.
He noted public concerns regarding whether guidelines exist for campus theatre productions.
"I want to clarify that every university has its own guidelines. However, sometimes when creative programmes are carried out by students, they are viewed from different perspectives.
"Corrective measures must be taken because we do not want to offend the sensitivities of our multi-racial and multi-religious society. This is about the decorum and values of the Malaysian public. UM has already taken steps to rectify the situation," he said.
Zambry was speaking after a walkabout at the Sabah Zone II Jom Masuk Universiti 2026 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today.
Also present were Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin and UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.
Zambry advised arts and creative faculties across all universities to be more sensitive toward such elements in their work.
However, he cautioned against extreme measures, such as closing down faculties over the controversy.
"I do not think that would be proactive. That is a reactive step that assumes this will cause a major problem. We will instead make corrections based on existing guidelines," he said.
The performance, allegedly staged at the university, drew public backlash after clips featuring "indecent elements" were shared widely on social media.
UM issued an apology for the oversight, stating it would not compromise on any violation of established programme guidelines or regulations.
Initial investigations by the university found that the scene in question was not part of the original script vetted by the organisers and constituted a clear violation of competition rules. |
