Abstract :
SHAH ALAM: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has proposed that the state postpone the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August until the conflict in the Middle East subsides and the Shah Alam Stadium renovation is fully complete. Sultan Sharafuddin said the decision was in view of the high costs involved in hosting the multi-sport event.   "In the current economic climate, I am of the opinion that it would be more appropriate for the event to be deferred until the crisis in the Middle East is resolved and until the Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed," the Sultan of Selangor said in his speech at the opening of the Selangor state legislative assembly sitting here today. Present were Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Sultan Sharafuddin also decreed that the 2026 Piala Sultan Selangor be cancelled.   The Selangor Ruler, however, consented to going ahead with the Under-15 Silver Jubilee Cup football tournament involving school students from districts across Selangor. "This Under-15 tournament for secondary students is aimed at nurturing young talent and instilling sportsmanship at the grassroots level. "Moreover, football remains the most popular sport among the people of Selangor," Sultan Sharafuddin said.   Last week, the 2026 Sukma supreme committee announced that the event would proceed as scheduled from Aug 15 to 24 next year, despite challenges from the global energy crisis and the wider economic impact being felt worldwide. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the decision was reached after careful and comprehensive consideration of all aspects, including preparations by the organisers and state athletes. This year's Sukma is expected to feature 474 events from 37 sports, to be held from Aug 15 to 24 next year. By gender breakdown, 239 events will involve male athletes, 217 involve women, and 18 are mixed events. A total of 53 venues across nine districts in Selangor will be used for the competition, involving 12 local authorities, public and private higher education institutions, government and private agencies, as well as the National Velodrome in Negri Sembilan.
